{"id":3924,"date":"2019-04-27T14:34:46","date_gmt":"2019-04-27T18:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/54.235.7.55\/?post_type=news-items&#038;p=3924"},"modified":"2022-11-05T14:34:58","modified_gmt":"2022-11-05T18:34:58","slug":"sowing-the-seeds-of-community-service","status":"publish","type":"news-items","link":"https:\/\/lighthousemi.org\/news-items\/sowing-the-seeds-of-community-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Sowing the Seeds of Community Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"modal-ready\"><p><strong>Young volunteers spruce up SOS headquarters during Global Youth Service Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The South Oakland Shelter\u2019s Lathrup Village office got a springtime makeover Saturday \u2013 thanks to a small but mighty group of young metro Detroiters.<\/p>\n<p>About a half dozen teens and young adults turned out for the AmeriCorps Global Youth Service Day cleanup effort \u2014 eager to get to work and determined to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited,\u201d said Donoven Lipa, 12, of Hazel Park. \u201cThe more people who are helping, the more that will get done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people will see that and want to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And what a difference they made.<\/p>\n<p>They cleared the SOS lot of old wood, leaves and other debris and readied the agency\u2019s community garden for planting. Inside, they scraped stickers off the walls in preparation for the fresh paint set to come.<\/p>\n<p>And they showed our community that a few helping hands can sow a world of change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks so much better,\u201d said 21-year-old Asia Nelson of Pontiac. \u201cYou can really see the work we\u2019ve done and that\u2019s pretty rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Center Line siblings Meta Fleischhut, 18, and her brother, Erich, 13, put the day\u2019s mission into perspective perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get to help out the community, and you know you\u2019re helping other people in the process,\u201d Erich said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important to give back,\u201d Meta added. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way to show everyone respect and love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year marks the 30th anniversary of Global Youth Service Day, an annual celebration of \u2014 and a call to action for \u2014 the millions of young people around the world who contribute every day to the betterment of their communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur deepest appreciation goes out to the kids and their parents who came to our Global Youth Service Day event,\u201d said Leila Vallarino, head of SOS\u2019s community engagement. \u201cActivities like cleaning up the garden and picking up trash can seem small, but beautification projects like these give our clients dignity and make SOS a more welcoming place for both our shelter clients and the greater community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Saturday\u2019s Global Youth Service Day volunteers, the event was both a labor of love \u2013 and of learning.<\/p>\n<p>After the cleanup was complete, the young people assembled hygiene kits for SOS clients and participated in a computer-simulated poverty exercise led by SOS AmeriCorps members.<\/p>\n<p>The simulation challenged the group to make spending decisions with only a small amount of money, mirroring the heart-wrenching decisions people living in poverty are forced to make every day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe poverty simulation was meant to broaden people\u2019s horizons and connect the work we did today to the people we serve,\u201d said Denise Vernon, 23, an AmeriCorps Housing Search and Information specialist and the event chair.<\/p>\n<p>That message certainly wasn\u2019t lost on these young volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVolunteering is important because there is always someone less fortunate who needs something,\u201d Asia said. \u201cVolunteering allows you to be the light for that person. \u2026 I would tell other kids and teens to volunteer because money can\u2019t buy the connections you make or the sense of fulfillment you get from helping others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want to make a difference?
